ROLE OVERVIEW:
A Fitter technician is trained in fitting, assembling, and maintaining metal parts, structures, and machinery. Fitting is the backbone trade of heavy manufacturing, fabrication shops, and tooling divisions.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Blueprint reading and layout preparation
- Filing, scraping, drilling, tapping, and reaming
- Lathe operations and manual metal cutting
- Structural welding and machinery assembly
TOOLS USED:
- Vernier calipers, micrometers, and dial test indicators
- Files (flat, half-round, triangular), chisels, and hacksaws
- Drills, taps, dies, and hand grinders

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:
1. Q: What is the difference between a jig and a fixture?
A: A jig holds the work and guides the cutting tool, while a fixture holds the work in position but does not guide the cutting tool.
2. Q: How do you measure with a vernier caliper?
A: Read the main scale division aligned with the zero mark of the vernier scale, then add the vernier scale division that coincides with a main scale line multiplied by the least count.
